Adidas Original Releases Wearable NFTs Dubbed ‘Virtual Gear’


German sportswear manufacturer Adidas Originals has released the first wearable Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in history.

As per a published statement, the limited collection of blockchain-based virtual wearables is dubbed ‘Virtual Gear’ and has been released on Markedly, these digital collectibles signify the effort of the manufacturer to boost its “community-based, member-first, open metaverse strategy.”

“We’re laying down a marker in this new age of originality – one that unquestionably serves the community, heroes the purveyors and collectors of emerging style and culture, benefits the value creators, and supports the diversity of expression and utility that blurring virtual worlds has allowed us all to explore,” said Erika Wykes-Sneyd, the Vice President of Adidas Studio known as ‘Three Stripes Studio’.

The NFT collection holds 16 pieces of digital collectibles that are representations of both creative and cultural breakthroughs in the history of Adidas.

Most importantly, it is a bridge between Adidas’ past and future, physical and virtual, communities and creators, culture and identity. Additionally, three limited edition creator-led wearables which represent the creative flair of Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), Gmoney, and Punks Comics, respectively were added to the collection.

Adidas Introduces More Creativity With NFTs

Currently, the collectible is available in the wallets of existing Phase 2 Capsule NFT holders. Therefore, the previous holders of the Capsule NFT will be required to burn their former NFT to generate one of the newly launched blockchain-based virtual wearables. 

Virtual Gear was designed to easily interact, respond and adapt with any frontier in Web3.0 due to the interoperability status with identity-based projects and worlds which is embedded in them. Only virtual avatars can out on the virtual apparel by utilizing a PFP dressing tool.

It also represents an idea of wearable clothing that can transcend time and space, a community that is vividly diverse, and a level of utility that can be explored and even discovered as worlds and avatars take new forms.”

‘Into the Metaverse’ was Adidas Original’s first launched NFT collection in December 2021. Holders of the NFT were given access to customized merchandise that will have the branding of its partner players in the space. Shortly after its launch, it became second place on the NFT marketplace OpenSea.
