Crypto firm Blockchain.com has announced that it will let users claim free “.blockchain” domain names supported by unstoppable Domains. As per the announcement made this Friday, the crypto exchange will allow 82 million registered users to own a .blockchain domain. The new feature came as a potential challenge to Ethereum Name Service.

Notably, Unstoppable is an NFT domain name provider and digital identity platform working on domains linked to readable cryptocurrency addresses.

Blockchain.com partners with Unstoppable Domains

According to Blockchain.com, it became the first company to have a branded top-level domain with Unstoppable Domains. The company writes about the domain by stating:

“Similar to an email address, a .blockchain domain is an easy-to-remember address for sending and receiving crypto.”

This lets users transfer assets without being implicated with a string of complex mix of characters and digits. Users can reduce the chances of their crypto funds being sent to the wrong address by owning a .blockchain domain. Moreover, being easy and free make them even more advantageous over other options.

“Instead of having to copy-and-paste long, complex wallet addresses like bc1qw508d6qejxtdg4y5r3zarvary0c5xw7kv8f3t4, you can simply type in an easy-to-remember domain like john.blockchain.”

According to the official announcement made on Medium, users can join the waitlist to be among the first Blockchain.com wallet users to claim their free .blockchain domain. The exchange will be rolling out the feature to claim free domain directly in the Blockchain.com Wallet app – starting with iOS.

Users usually change the domain names for their crypto addresses by using the popular Ethereum Name Service (ENS). ENS also provides domains for crypto wallets, websites, content, and hashes, as well as the option to link one’s online metadata and addresses under a single pseudonym.

Crypto locals tended to bid for the popular names due to the uniqueness of each ENS domain, similar to how people fought for DNS domains in the early days of the Internet. Blockchain.com’s latest move provides customers with an alternative to ENS.
