Bluzelle Launches Decentralized Alternative to IPFS

Decentralized storage network Bluzelle, has launched its mainnet R2 file storage system as an alternative way of decentralizing nonfungible tokens (NFTs) and their corresponding data, as opposed to IPFS. The launch follows, amid growing concerns regarding the lack of immutability on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) protocol — a not-so-discussed model of storage that is arguably the standard for most NFT assets including Beeple and Cryptopunks.

Bluzelle Launches Mainnet Decentralized Storage for NFT Content

During its announcement, Bluzelle made sure to mention the prominent use-cases for their service. According to the company, these include all NFT content around 3D digital art or video reels.

Bluzelle’s reasons for opting for this decentralized alternative is not far fetched though. Surely, IPFS is a decentralized network. But it doesn’t exactly provide decentralized storage as NFT sits only in one node, that can go down at anytime. This new storage however, will ensure that user assets are safely tucked away in multiple places at the same time.  Ultimately, this means lesser risks for users.

Recall that back in March, a Twitter user identified as Jonty Wareing shared his views and assessment by revealing the shortcomings of IPFS with regards to NFT projects.

At the time, Wareing said that if an NFT token is bought, it does one of two things. Either it points towards an IPFS hash, or to a URL on the internet. He then further claimed, that in most cases, it would reference an IPFS gateway on the internet that is being run by the very startup where the NFT was bought from. He finally noted that the URL is not the media but a JSON metadata file.

Reports show that Bluzelle’s new infrastructure has already been deployed on Mintable. And in the next few months, should be implemented on a number of other NFT marketplaces after successful testing.
