The cryptocurrency lending platform Celsius Network’s Chief financial officer (CFO) Yaron Shalem was among seven people arrested in Tel Aviv city in Israel. In Israel, court proceedings are usually held in public unless there are exceptional circumstances in which a gag order can be imposed on an inquiry to protect the identities of those involved, as is the case with the individuals involved in the Beitar Jerusalem owner Moshe Hogeg investigation.
In a tweet this Friday, the company said that it had been recently made aware of a police investigation in Israel that involves one of its employees. The company didn’t name the person. The tweet further says:
“While this is in no way related to the employee’s time or work, the employee is immediately suspended. We have verified that no assets were mishandled or misplaced.”
The Celsius recently finished the acquisition of Israeli cybersecurity company GK8 in an agreement worth $115 million.
Hogeg offers cooperation
Shalem’s name has been included with 17 others, including Hogeg, in an appendix to a record carrying the seal of the Israel police’s national fraud investigation unit. Judge Erez Melamed of the Rishon Lezion Magistrate’s Court stamped the document. The appendix, however, does not specify what kind of document it was connected to.
The date on the stamp is three days earlier of Israeli police’s announcement that eight people, including Hogeg, had been arrested on suspicion of money laundering, fraud, and sexual assault.
Recently, as TheCoinRise reported, Israel’s regulator passed a new AML (Anti-money laundering) law for crypto. According to a source, the police will begin collecting evidence for sexual assaults in the following days. Police hope that publicizing Hogeg’s name and the claims against him will lead to other victims coming forward.
Late Tuesday, a Celsius official claimed he couldn’t confirm or deny whether Yaron Shalem was one of the former Hogeg associates arrested during the “ask-me-anything” on Twitter.
