Dominic Williams, the Dfinity founder, feels that content development companies such as OnlyFans are now ready for disruption since decentralized projects are becoming mainstream.
He calls developers on Internet Computer (ICP) to create a blockchain-powered content platform — a strong blockchain tool that was developed earlier this year by the company.
Williams highlighted current efforts to censor adult content by Financial Institutions on OnlyFans and the broader perspective of smart contract platforms.
OnlyFans efforts
Major financial institutions like JPMorgan and Metro Bank pressured OnlyFans to prohibit sexually explicit content from the platform. While talking to the media, Tim Stokely, CEO Of the company, said that the company had to stop in compliance with the bank’s demands. He added that it has been defamed for only creating and displaying adult content.
The banks warned the company that they would stop their partnerships with it as it was supposedly damaging their reputation.
The whole situation gives rise to the talks about censorship as Stokely would eventually cancel the current prohibition once the banking partner reassures him. Dominic Williams said that the company is the live case study for why there is a need for decentralization in content creation platforms.
William adds that the warning is not just limited to credit card companies but is also constituting several traditional IT services. He believes that blockchain and decentralization can solve this problem.
The point to note here is that decentralization alone would not solve the problem as it can provide true censorship resistance in platforms like OnlyFans, but it is still dependent on traditional IT for its functioning.
Dfinity’s granting is an excellent start
William is continuously calling developers to work on creating more decentralized versions of the platform on Internet computers.
He, however, expressed that the $250 million grant program by Dfinity Foundation is an excellent beginning to encourage more such ideas.
