Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram are all down, in what appears to be too much of a coincidence, and users of the social media platforms are beginning to ask questions.
The outage occurred at about 11:41 am ET, around the same time that Facebook’s Antigone Davis was live on CNBC defending the company over a whistleblower’s accusations. A whistleblower had earlier accused Facebook of choosing profit over public safety. However, while the interview went on, the company’s entire string of services suddenly went offline.
So far, the real reason behind the outage remains to be confirmed, however, Andy Stone, Facebook communications exec has taken to his Twitter page to pacify the company’s customer base. He explained that the company is fully aware of the outage and are working tirelessly to ensure that things are back as they were as soon as possible.
As it appears at the moment, Twitter is the only go-to platform and from any Twitter feed, it is pretty much obvious that the problem is a global one. Although details of the outage is still sketchy, but DNS records of those platforms indicate that it’s a DNS problem. It always is, right? Dane Knecht, Cloudflare senior vice president also says that Facebook’s border gateway protocol routes have been withdrawn from the internet. BGP is responsible for helping networks pick the best path to deliver internet traffic.
As of the time of writing this report, Facebook is yet to give an official statement about the matter. And the issue is not limited to Facebook, but other services of the company, including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
Meanwhile, on a lighter note, the Twitter official account has welcomed everybody to its own platform, and top official accounts like the likes of WhatsApp, Reddit, and Jack Dorsey himself have already responded in the comments. Seems the handlers of the accounts have no other place to be at right now, just like the rest of us.
