The Geneva International Motor Show that was initially planned to hold in February 2022, will no longer take place. In all honesty, the canceling of the show is not exactly surprising, seeing as the COVID pandemic is still not totally under control. Moreover, there’s also the problem of global chip shortage presently facing the auto industry.

Speaking on Thursday, organizers of the show cited that there are too many uncertainties surrounding both the pandemic, and even the shortage of chips. And for this reason, automakers are being reluctant about committing to the show, the organizers said.

Usually, the International Motor Show is an annual showcase of wild supercars, prototypes, and concepts. However, as confirmed by the organizers, the 2022 showcase is being postponed with hopes that there will be an even more impactful show in 2023 when the show finally comes back

According to a high official of the show, Maurice Turrettini explains how hard they have pushed to ensure that the Geneva International Motor Show was reactivated this year. But considering the realities of COVID-19 pandemic, Maurice then admitted that a large indoor event like GIMS will expose event attendees to the threats of the pandemic situation.

Maurice also added that the organizers don’t really see this decision as a postponement, rather than a cancellation. He expressed his confidence about the Geneva International Motor Show will coming back stronger than ever in 2023.

The Chips Are Down As Well

CEO of the show, Sandro Mesquita is not too optimistic about the chip crisis either. He believes the shortage is likely to persist well into next year, therefore, having negative financial implications for OEMs. Meaning that, most brands will not exactly be able to make a commitment to participate in a trade fair at this moment in time.

In recent times however, some auto shows have resumed their events. For example, the Los Angeles Auto Show, is set to happen in mid-November, and is presently still on track to happen. But other shows like that of Geneva, and then the New York International Auto Show, are being forced by the delta variant of the COVID-19 virus.
