Kanye West focused on the real world, says no to NFTs

American rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, blasts out against the Non-fungible tokens on Instagram, which itself is exploring to integrate NFTs on its platform. West isn’t going to buy an NFT from the Bored Ape Yacht Club anytime soon.

“Do not ask me to do a f*cking NFT,” Ye said in a harshly worded Instagram post on Monday. The photo’s caption adds that he is focused on creating “real products in the real world,” which he shared with his 10.5 million followers.

In a follow-up remark to the Instagram photo, he was again blunt: 

“STOP ASKING ME TO DO NFTs I’M NOT FINNA CO-SIGN … FOR NOW I’M NOT ON THAT WAVE I MAKE MUSIC AND PRODUCTS IN THE REAL WORLD”.

While celebrities like Neymar, Eminem, and Jake Paul made cash grabs for NFTs in 2021, Kanye West, a billionaire and previous presidential candidate, is adamantly opposed to them. This week, the Chinese legendary music artist Jay Chou also announced the auction of his classic song in the form of an NFT.

Kanye West is not alone

Kayne West joins the growing number of NFT critics, which includes celebrities like Keanu Reeves. In an interview promoting the Matrix Resurrections, movie actor Reeves remarked that NFTs are “easily reproduced.”

Unlike Reeves’ character Neo, who is stuck in the Matrix, Ye will continue to work in the “real world” on “real products.” The album Donda 2 by Kanye West is set to be released on February 22. Meanwhile, NFT fans would be puzzled as to how Ye could be so heartless towards NFTs.

The brightening potential of the virtual world that includes metaverse, NFTs, and concepts like Web 3, might seem revolutionary, but many critics are raising their voices against it. Last year, Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk criticized and joked about Web 3 and questioned its decentralized nature.
