McDonald’s China Launches First Ever NFT

McDonald’s China has launched its first Non-Fungible Token (NFT) in China. The launch comes with the burger franchise’s 31st anniversary in the Chinese mainland market.

Big Mac Rubik’s Cube officially opened today, October 8, based on information on the Company website. While celebrating the milestone event, McDonald’s China is also opening its new headquarters building in Shanghai, where it all began, 31 years ago.

According to its CEO, Zhang Jiaying, this is the first of 188 tokens that the Chinese branch intends to give its customers and staff, with time. In McDonald’s signature colors of red, orange, and yellow, and the spirit of the brand, Big Mac Cube draws inspiration from the structure of the new headquarters building in Shanghai.

“McDonald’s is a young and trendy brand that has always paid attention to fashion trends and cutting-edge technology,” Zhang remarked. He also expressed his joy that McDonald was the first domestic restaurant brand to release an NFT.

“At this special moment, we use the form of NFT to share McDonald’s innovation, digitalization, and trend art with employees and consumers,” he said.

For McDonald’s, the NFT is a symbol of its ethos–service, tolerance, integrity, community, and family, according to the company’s website.

NFT Frenzy with Food and Beverage Chains

McDonald’s isn’t the only food chain to have recently delved into NFT. Other foods and beverage brands have also joined the razzmatazz in keeping with the internet frenzy associated with NFTs.

Earlier this year, Taco Bell broke the internet by announcing its sale of taco-themed images and GIFs on Rarible, an NFT trading platform.

Also, in August, Budweiser put up a hand-drawn Twitter display picture of a beer-rocket NFT worth 8 Ethereum, then valued at $26,000. The beer company also registered an Ethereum domain name beer.eth for 30 ETH, valued at approximately $100,000 at the time.

McDonald’s rival, Burger King, also conducted an auction for its NFT campaign, “Keep it Real Meals,” at Sweet, an NFT trading platform.
