Mercedes-Benz EQS gets a 350-mile range rating

While the fully electric Mercedes-Benz EQS is already a load of luxury and tech features, its range is not to be toyed with at all. At least, if the estimations of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with regards to its range is anything to go by, then the Mercedes-Benz EQS is bringing the heat to some of its six-figure rivals.

By their estimates, EPA says the rear-wheel-drive version should get close to 350 miles on a full battery. Whereas, those in possession of the all-wheel-drive version should be expecting a little less, about 340 miles. Quite close you’d say, even with Tesla’s new triple-motor Model S Plaid, which the EPA says is having about 348 miles on a full charge on the 21-inch wheels. Although, Tesla is claiming that the Model S Plaid on 19-inch wheels will be getting closer to 400 miles, but that claim is yet to be verified by the EPA. But all things being equal, a dual-motor Long Range Model S will definitely go above 400 miles, though that car is obviously being delayed in favor of the Plaid.

Meanwhile, Audi’s E-Tron GT — which is built on the Porsche Taycan’s electric drivetrain — is not even anywhere near in rating. The E-Tron is rated for something around the mid-to-low 200-mile range. However, there’s only one EV up there, that easily eclipses the EQS’s range figures, and that is the Lucid Air. In September, the Lucid Air sedan received a whopping 520-mile rating from the EPA.

Still though, there’s an air of uncertainty around the EQS especially when it finally goes on sale in the US later this year. The question is about whether buyers cross-shop against these other EVs or if they want a Mercedes-Benz and happen to choose electric. If they do want a Mercedes-Benz and choose electric, there’s an extra benefit. Yes, a benefit in the sense that the EQS’ starting price is actually less than that of the gas-powered S-Class it will most likely one day supplant. No doubts, an extra 100-plus miles of range is always goin to be nice, but getting into the mid-300s should be a little too much for most buyers’ daily and weekly needs.
