Football superstar Mesut Ozil is laser-eyed on cryptocurrencies, joining the popular trend by Bitcoin proponents that kickstarted earlier in the year. The laser eyes of Mesut Ozil as showcased on his Twitter profile picture has a pronounced undertone and per SunSport, the iconic footballer is looking forward to launching his own digital token to promote his clothing brand, M10StreetWear.
The footballer who moved from Arsenal to Fenerbahce in January launched the clothing line last year, and the plans for the digital coin are to bolster the M10 brand image and incentive offerings. While the details of the affiliated digital token are yet to be unveiled, SunSport reported that the clothing line may give exclusive discounts to holders of the token, while opening up more use cases in the near future.
The report noted that the digital token, despite its utility, will be tradable just like Bitcoin (BTC), and will present Ozil as one of the industry’s most bullish on the nascent industry.
The claim that digital currencies are the future of finance appears to be making more sense to sports heavyweights including clubs and players alike. Many institutions in the sports industry are beginning to leverage the capabilities of blockchain technology to recreate key aspects of their fan engagement processes.
One of the obvious ways this has been done includes the launch of fan tokens as powered by Chiliz and Socios. Amongst the clubs that have fan tokens include Juventus, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich amongst others.
Just the way innovation in the digital currency ecosystem is known to grow, so also is the push by key stakeholders in the sports industry to integrate this technology as it keeps soaring to new heights. From sports brands leveraging Non-Fungible Token (NFT) to create and monetize magic moments as in the case of the NBA Top Shots, to the permission of sports leagues to be sponsored by crypto startups, deeper integration with the nascent world of virtual currencies has continued to grow at a very fast pace.
Besides Mesut Ozil, other sports personalities with active involvement in cryptocurrencies include Japanese legend Honda, 35, who launched his own cryptocurrency, the KSK Honda Coin, in October 2020, and Colombian star Rodriguez who announced before 2018 World Cup he was launching his own.
