The gaming sandbox which has gained massive popularity as a video game platform has declared that the move by some of its creators to design products that utilize NFT innovation is against the fundamental of the game.

“To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft client and server applications nor may they be utilized to create NFTs associated with any in-game content, including worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods,” Minecraft said.

As part of its justification for this move, Minecraft says what underpins the success of NFTs is their scarcity, and the platform says this will no longer create an inclusive environment for its players across the board.

Additional Reasons Minecraft Boycotted NFTs

The startup also noted that it is mainly concerned with the inherent risks of price inflations which if allowed to thrive, will shift the focus for players over time. Minecraft also mentioned the risks associated with developers who literally abandon their projects to the detriment of players or in-game asset holders.

“Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together. NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term Joy and success of our players,” the gaming sandbox detailed.

The position of Minecraft comes as a significant surprise as many are already advocation that the traditional gaming industry should embrace NFT-related innovations.

While the likes of Animoca Brands and Square Enix are already pioneering the move into integrating NFTs, the stance of Minecraft is a piece of evidence the adoption of digital collectibles will not be an industry-wide position.
