The Firefox Internet browser developer, Mozilla announced that it has bought over the Vancouver-based startup developing a “web-based metaverse.” Mozilla is taking this step to boost its metaverse ecosystem together with developing the company’s Virtual Reality (VR) collaboration platform, Hubs.

According to a blog post, the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Mozilla, Innovation Ecosystem Imo Udom said “Bringing onboard Active Replica will help us accelerate some of our most important, in-demand work, including more personalized subscription tiers, improving the Hubs onboarding experience, and introducing new interaction capabilities in the Hubs engine.”

“Together, we see this as a key opportunity to bring even more innovation and creativity to Hubs than we could alone. We will benefit from their unique experience and ability to create amazing experiences that help organisations use virtual spaces to drive impact,” Udom added.

Active Replica’s Co-founders Get New Job Roles

Active Replica, which was founded two years ago by Jacob Ervin and Valerian Denis, has made several contributions to Mozilla Hubs.

The co-founders stated that “Mozilla has long advocated for a healthier internet and has been an inspiration to us in its dedication and contributions to the open web. By joining forces with the Mozilla Hubs team, we are able to further expand on our mission and inspire a new generation of creators, connectors, and builders.”

Following the deal, both co-founders joined Mozilla occupying executive positions. Ervin, who has always been a software expert leading several AR and VR projects, now serves as a senior engineering manager at Mozilla while Denis works as Product Lead. Before this acquisition by Mozilla, Active Replica had never publicly announced a funding round.

Meanwhile, Active Replica will continue to work with its existing clients, partners, and its entire community.

At the beginning of the year, Mozilla suspended its crypto donation campaign after it received several criticisms from its community members. In light of acquisitions, Binance also made its foray into Japan with the acquisition of the Sakura exchange.
