Nokia best known for its mobile phones has established Metaverse Labs to investigate the possible applications of the Metaverse, a virtual environment that mimics the real world, in a variety of sectors including manufacturing, logistics, and transportation.
In an interview with Cointelegraph, Robert Joyce, Chief Technical Officer of Nokia Oceania, stated that the company has created two labs that support the Metaverse technology. One of the labs is a microbrewery that was established last year in partnership with the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.
Researchers from the University were able to work together with scientists from a sister lab at Dortmund University in Germany with the help of Augmented Reality (AR). Both institutions conducted joint experiments where they simulate the actual beer brewing process from start to finish.
Similarly, Nokia has also been exploiting the Metaverse to assist the communication between workers in the aircraft industry. Joyce explained that the company has adopted the Metaverse to assist Cessna aircraft technicians at outlying airports in South Australia.
In this scenario, AR is used to teach folks how to maintain a Cessna by utilizing a Microsoft HoloLens that was connected to 5G.
Furthermore, Nokia highlighted in a newsroom article that its support for the Metaverse is hinged upon two key technology supersets; Web3 and Cloud. The firm claims that Cloud computing is the foundation for digital transformation in all industries.
Besides the aspects Nokia is focusing on, the metaverse can also be applied in the travel industry. In December, a survey conducted by Booking.com revealed that the Metaverse will influence the tourism sector in 2023. The online travel agency specifically predicted that travelers could make real-time decisions about where they want to go using the Metaverse.
The survey, which drew 24,179 respondents from 32 nations, included issues like where tourists would like to travel in 2023, what motivated them to take the trip, and how important a budget is to their travel plans.
Meanwhile, Meta Platforms has announced that it would be injecting resources into the Metaverse. Reality Labs’ CTO Andrew Bosworth stated that the company may devote 20% of its 2023 budget to its metaverse business.
