Scam Alert: New Mars Stealer Crypto Wallet Now in the Market

The digital currency ecosystem is filled with different scams and fraud tactics that are targeted at users’ hard-earned money. While cybercriminals have continued to evolve in their approach, the education and awareness campaign must also match this evolution in order to keep crypto investors safe.

One of the latest approaches developed by hackers to steal users’ funds is through the Mars stealer malware, a sophisticated tool that can obtain users’ information without authorization. While this appears similar to other tools used by these cybercriminals, it is different in that it is now distributed in the form of a downloadable application.

One of these applications is called the Mars Wallet. This wallet can be accessed through its domain found here. The Mars Wallet is a perfect embodiment of the Mars Stealer Malware that is by all standards poorly designed. A look at the website shows how the domain is not the work of a professional and legitimate wallet service provider.

Key Website Features that Prove Mars Wallet is a Scam

The Mars wallet website home page is exactly as shown in the image above. A scroll down will show a number of visible typographical errors in the promotional content that was used in designing the website.

While this might be shrugged off as a red flag, the promotional video it claims will help its users to understand how to use the platform leads nowhere. Since the digital currency ecosystem deals with so many technicalities, project innovators often take the pain to provide all resources that will simplify the process as best as possible.

Because of the fraudulent nature of the Mars Wallet, such educational contents are generally absent. Although the wallet service provider had managed to accrue many followers on its social media platforms like Twitter and Discord, the application to be downloaded is not hosted on any App Store.

Consider some of the most renowned cold wallets in the crypto space like MetaMask, Trust Wallet, and the like, they are often hosted on either the Apple AppStore or the Google PlayStore for users to download them. This provides the necessary credibility to their genuineness.

Instead of the “Download” link to redirect to the right stores, it downloads on your device automatically, thus predisposing you to all forms of harm.

Associated Mars Wallet Weak Target Sources

The discovery of the scam nature of the Mars Wallet as a version of Mars Stealer Malware was first showcased by Morphisec and Kaspersky back in 2022. The malware was reported to be based on Oski Stealer and has been active in the wild since at least June 2021. It is typically disguised as a Plugin or an application.

Per its design, the Mars Stealer malware can gain access to users’ information such as browser autofill data, credit card information, plugins, and information identifying victim machines. When the malware has collected the target information from the users, it will automatically uninstall itself.

The Mars Wallet targets a number of browsers and applications including Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer, Brave, Kometa, MetaMask, and Coinbase Wallet among others. The safe bet against the Mars Wallet is to steer clear of downloading it in the first place.
