BlackRock’s Bid for Spot Ethereum ETF Signals Crypto Investment Confidence

BlackRock, the asset management company, has filed for a slot for an Ethereum ETF, demonstrating its commitment to investments in cryptocurrencies as investor confidence in the approval of such opportunities continues to grow.

The approval-pending iShares Ethereum Trust has been recently registered and is to be listed on Nasdaq. If approved, this ETF will give investors exposure to Ether, the second most popular cryptocurrency, whose crypto market cap is only dwarfed by Bitcoin’s,  without a need for direct ownership of the asset.

BlackRock is recommending the transformation of the Trust into a “spot” ETF, pointing to the fact that it will hold real Ether and not futures products that are related to the cryptocurrency.

While the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has previously approved futures-based crypto ETFs, it has reservations about fraud and manipulation in the spot crypto market.

The proposed IShares Ethereum Trust ETF custodian is Coinbase Custody Trust Company and it will use the CME CF Ether-Dollar Reference Rate – New York Variant. The asset manager has been demonstrating a growing interest in crypto and is waiting for a decision on a spot Bitcoin ETF application.

Other runners-up in the Ethereum ETF competition include VanEck, ARK Invest, Grayscale, and Fidelity. The historical delays by the SEC in approving spot Bitcoin ETFs have created uncertainties about the approval of spot Ethereum ETFs, with some predictions of chances of approval in May 2024 as small as 48% while others rate it as high as 70%.

Approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs will embolden the path to spot Ethereum products. Although the SEC’s decision to approve spot Bitcoin ETFs has been long in coming, it has been attracting many investors who used to have a hands-off approach to crypto.
