Authorities in New York have brought serious criminal charges against a 23-year-old man from Brooklyn. The defendant was accused of running a large-scale crypto phishing scheme targeting many Coinbase users.
The case comes as phishing scams and illicit activities continue to rise in the crypto industry.
The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office announced that Ronald Spektor has been indicted on 31 criminal counts. This includes first-degree grand larceny and money laundering. Investigators alleged that Spektor carried out the scheme between April 2023 and December 2024.
According to prosecutors, Spektor directly contacted victims and presented himself as a Coinbase representative. He warned users that hackers had compromised their accounts and urged them to act quickly to protect their assets.
Under this pressure, victims transferred their digital assets to new digital wallets. Prosecutors say Spektor controlled the wallets and quickly took the stolen funds. He then moved the crypto through mixers, swapping services, and gambling platforms to hide its origin and make recovery harder.
Prosecutors say the suspect used anonymous online accounts and a Telegram channel to talk openly about his crimes. These posts helped investigators connect him to the stolen crypto and follow how the funds moved across different platforms.
Investigators also spoke with more than 70 victims and closely studied blockchain records during the case. Authorities have so far recovered about $105,000 in cash and roughly $400,000 in cryptocurrency.
Coinbase worked closely with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Virtual Currency Unit during the investigation. The company assisted with tracing stolen assets and identifying the suspect.
Independent blockchain investigator ZachXBT also played a key role. His findings contributed to identifying the suspect, and Coinbase later acknowledged his assistance.
Earlier in the year, ZachXBT reported that users lost more than $65 million to social engineering scams within just two months.
In May, Coinbase disclosed a separate data breach affecting nearly 70,000 users. That incident involved criminals bribing overseas support staff, with estimated financial costs ranging from $180 million to $400 million.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong publicly welcomed the indictment and emphasized that individuals who target Coinbase users will face consequences. Notably,
In response, Spektor pleaded not guilty to all charges, and his attorney described the case against him as speculative. Prosecutors, however, revealed that Spektor was preparing to leave the country before his arrest.
Reports also indicate that his father is now considered an active suspect in the ongoing investigation. Authorities say the case highlights the growing risk of crypto-related fraud.
Notably, the case comes during a challenging period for Coinbase’s security reputation.
