Six men have been charged in connection with the kidnapping of a Chicago family and their nanny, allegedly extorting them for $15 million in cryptocurrency. The case details a five-day hostage ordeal that resulted in large crypto ransom payments.
The case highlights growing concerns over crypto-related kidnappings, where criminals exploit the pseudonymous nature of digital assets to facilitate ransom demands.
According to a Feb. 12 report by the Chicago Tribune, the suspects forced their way into a townhouse under the pretense of discussing garage door damage before brandishing firearms and abducting the victims.
The kidnappers allegedly transported the hostages to multiple locations, including an Airbnb rental an hour away, before forcing them to transfer Bitcoin, Ether, and other cryptocurrencies under threat of death.
Throughout the five-day captivity, the victims complied with ransom demands while seeking an opportunity to alert authorities. One of the hostages managed to send a distress message to his father via the Chinese messaging app WeChat, leading to increased scrutiny from law enforcement.
The victims were released on Nov. 1 and walked to a nearby dry cleaner, where they eventually called an Uber to a hospital.
While $15 million was reportedly transferred, investigators have only accounted for $6 million of the stolen cryptocurrency so far. Officials are still tracking the remaining funds across various crypto wallets.
The six suspects were charged on Dec. 13, with only one arrest made so far. Zehuan Wei, 34, was apprehended while attempting to re-enter the U.S. from Mexico on Jan. 17. The other five—Fan Zhang, Huajing Yan, Shengnan Jiang, Shiqiang Lian, and Ye Cao—are believed to have fled to China following Wei’s arrest.
Authorities built their case using surveillance footage from the Airbnb, cryptocurrency wallet activity, and DNA swabs from a rented Chrysler Pacifica linked to the crime. Investigators also analyzed a white Ford van used in the abduction and compared images of the suspects with U.S. Customs and Border Protection records.
At least two victims later identified some of the alleged kidnappers in a police lineup.
