The iconic mobile game Flappy Bird is making a comeback with a modern twist—this time incorporating Web3 elements but steering clear of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The new version, launched on September 16, sparked curiosity after hidden web pages hinted at potential crypto integrations.

These suspicions were confirmed when the team behind the revival revealed that Web3 features would be part of the game, specifically through the messaging app Telegram.

Flappy Bird Supports Web3

A spokesperson from the Flappy Bird Foundation clarified that users will have the option to engage with the Web3 components, but they won’t be mandatory. The spokesperson stated, “There will be future releases without crypto features on mobile platforms.” Moreover, the team has emphasized that the game will always be 100% free to play and will never involve NFTs.

In a statement posted on X, the team reiterated that no crypto wallets are necessary to enjoy the game. Players who wish to avoid the Web3 features can simply opt out, with the primary gameplay experience remaining unaffected by crypto.

The game will generate revenue through in-app transactions, such as buying energy and physics-altering items, as well as optional advertisements that can offer bonuses like score multipliers.

The Web3 integrations will use Telegram’s blockchain, The Open Network (TON).

Launch Details

The new Flappy Bird version, available as a Telegram Mini App, revives the classic side-scrolling challenge that took the mobile gaming world by storm back in 2013. In the game, players control a bird and navigate it through a series of green pipes by tapping their phone screens. The game’s viral success became overwhelming for its creator, Dong Nguyen, who famously pulled the original game in 2014, citing its addictive nature.

Despite its Web3 expansion, the new release distances itself from NFTs, a move that echoes the stance of Flappy Bird’s original creator. Nguyen, who has disassociated himself from the game’s relaunch, remains critical of the integration of cryptocurrency into gaming. He expressed his opposition to crypto involvement, maintaining that he doesn’t support this direction for the game.
