Moroccan authorities have arrested a man believed to be behind a recent wave of high-profile kidnappings in France targeting cryptocurrency executives and their families. The suspect, 24-year-old French-Moroccan national Badiss Mohamed Amide Bajjou, was detained following a coordinated operation between Morocco’s national police and intelligence services at the request of French authorities.

During the arrest, officials reportedly found Bajjou in possession of multiple bladed weapons and several mobile phones, raising concerns about the scale and sophistication of his alleged operations. An Interpol red notice had been issued for Bajjou in 2023, linking him to a broader network of criminal activities, including kidnapping for ransom.

France’s Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, acknowledged the arrest in a post on X, thanking Moroccan authorities for their swift cooperation. “This arrest demonstrates the excellent judicial collaboration between our two countries, especially in tackling organized crime,” Darmanin stated.

Crypto Execs Become Targets of Kidnappings

The arrest comes amid rising concern over crypto-related kidnappings in France. The most recent incident occurred on May 13, when masked attackers attempted to abduct the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat, the CEO of French crypto platform Paymium. The attack, which took place in broad daylight, was thwarted with the help of alert bystanders who intervened as the suspects tried to force the victims into a waiting van.

A video captured by a passerby quickly circulated online, showing Noizat’s daughter resisting the assailants before they fled the scene. The bold nature of the attempt has intensified public scrutiny of how such crimes are being orchestrated and the growing risks faced by those involved in the cryptocurrency industry.

Earlier in May, Paris police rescued the father of another crypto entrepreneur who had been held hostage in a 7-million-euro ($7.8 million) extortion scheme. And in January, hardware wallet maker Ledger co-founder, David Balland, was abducted from his home and held for more than 24 hours before being freed in a police raid.

France Steps Up Security Measures for Crypto Figures

In response to the rising kidnappings, French law enforcement is ramping up protection for crypto business leaders and their families. Measures include priority access to emergency services, detailed home security reviews, and safety briefings to help executives implement best practices for personal security.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations into Bajjou’s activities and potential accomplices remain ongoing.
