It has been about three months since Alexey Pertsev, the Tornado Cash developer, was sentenced to five years in jail term. A sentence he has since appealed. However, the lawsuit has begun taking a huge financial toll on him.
In a recent video posted on X and shared by a “Free Pertsev & Storm” account, Pertsev has decided to rally the support of developers in the crypto ecosystem and all stakeholders. In the fresh plea for funds, Pertsev maintains winning the appeal in court would help set a precedent in protecting developers.
Per the appeal from the “Free Pertsev & Storm” account, Pertsev urgently needs between $750 million and $1 million to meet ongoing legal fees as he seeks to overturn his earlier conviction. According to the account, the authorities have not spared any resources to prosecute their case against the Tornado developer.
In the two-minute video, Pertsev solicited support to meet his legal obligation as he has expanded his team of lawyers to exonerate himself in an appeal he filed at the s-Hertogenbosch court in the Netherlands.
In the video, Pertsev expressly stated he disagreed with the court’s ruling that he, as a developer, had to pay for the crimes of malicious actors who used his app to perpetrate fraud. The developer urged all in the industry to come to his aid, as his imprisonment limited his earning ability.
“It raises a question, when the developers can be held responsible for their invention, if misused by third parties. Where is that line that you cannot cross? I have extended my legal team and we are eager to disprove the verdict and provide clarity to this issue. It will be of huge help to our industry,” Pertsev stated.
Donors have been urged to send donations in Ethereum or fiat currency to WeWantJusticeDAO or via Juicebox as an alternative. The Juicebox option only allows for Ethereum donations. These accounts had received donations in the past, and as of June 19, the advocacy group said they had received over 654 ETH (approximately $2.3 million at the time). Meanwhile, the “Free Pertsev & Storm” account says $1.39 million has been spent on legal fees between December 2023 and May 2024.
An additional 70 Ether flowed in via the JusticeDAO page, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin also donated 30 Ethereum, worth over $110,000 at the time to support Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm’s legal battle towards the end of May.
