Rootstock, one of the oldest projects in the Bitcoin ecosystem, is getting ready to launch new tools to help developers. These tools will make building faster and smarter systems on the Bitcoin blockchain easier.
The tools will use BitVMX, a new and updated version of BitVM, a system that lets people build smart contracts like the ones on Ethereum, on top of Bitcoin.
Bitcoin has mostly been used as a store of value, like digital gold. Many acknowledge its financial potential, and the asset is gaining widespread adoption in the digital space.
However, unlike Ethereum, it has not been easy to build apps or smart contracts on the Bitcoin blockchain. Rootstock wants to change that by using the BitVMX framework.
BitVMX is an upgraded version of BitVM, a programming language originally introduced in 2023 by Robin Linus. BitVM showed that smart contracts could work on Bitcoin without changing its main code.
With BitVMX, developers can create faster and more useful Layer-2 systems on Bitcoin, similar to what you see on Ethereum. This means Bitcoin can do more things without losing its security.
Using BitVMX, Rootstock aims to improve Bitcoin’s speed, scalability, and functionality while keeping the network secure.
In a recent statement, Sergio Lerner, the founder of Rootstock, said that an SDK will be released in a few weeks. This kit will help developers build their apps and tools using BitVMX.
Lerner explained that Bitcoin should not just be seen as digital gold. He wants it to become a platform for building new tools and services. This would bring more activity to the Bitcoin network.
Last year, Rootstock teamed up with Fairgate, a blockchain company. Together, they used BitVMX to check a special kind of proof called a zero-knowledge SNARK.
This is a type of cryptographic proof that helps confirm information without showing the actual data. It is used in Ethereum to make systems more private and scalable, and now Bitcoin can use it, too.
Furthermore, Rootstock, Fairgate, and a blockchain firm called Input Output (IO) also collaborated to form a group called BitVMX Force. This group will help set standards and prepare Bitcoin for future updates and improvements.
