Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive, has become the focal point of a high-stakes international standoff that has caused outrage in legal and political circles.
As his health deteriorates behind bars in Nigeria, 18 State Attorneys General have called on President Joe Biden to secure Gambaryan’s release.
The attorneys are urging the President to officially designate him as a hostage under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act.
On October 18, Gambaryan’s health caused more concerns when he could not appear in court due to illness. The presiding judge postponed his hearing until October 25, but the incident fueled a growing fire.
Gambaryan’s illness, combined with his extended detention since February 2024, prompted the U.S. attorneys to send a joint letter to Biden. They argued that Gambaryan’s detention is not only unlawful but life-threatening. Their plea to Biden underscores the situation’s urgency, as Gambaryan’s well-being remains in jeopardy.
A disturbing video released on September 2 heightened concerns further. The footage shows Gambaryan struggling to walk with a single crutch, repeatedly requesting a wheelchair, which guards deny.
In an X post, Binance CEO Richard Teng swiftly condemned the treatment and demanded Gambaryan’s immediate release. Teng and U.S. politicians had pushed for Gambaryan’s release in the past, but all efforts had proven futile.
Gambaryan’s troubles in Nigeria began in February 2024. This was after he traveled to the country to address allegations surrounding Binance’s involvement in the country’s economic crisis. The Nigerian authorities accused him of financial misconduct linked to a $34 million scandal.
However, many US lawmakers are not convinced of Gambaryan’s guilt. Representative Rich McCormick, among others, has stated that Gambaryan was detained without cause.
He argued that Nigeria was using him as a pawn to pressure Binance for financial gains. Notably, the Nigerian court has refused Gambaryan’s bail many times.
As Gambaryan’s health continues to worsen, the clock is ticking. His prolonged detention in Nigeria has become a critical test for U.S. diplomacy. It puts President Joe Biden at the center of a high-stakes international crisis.
Whether Gambaryan’s next court date will lead to justice or further delays remains to be seen, but the world is watching. Now, the pressure on President Biden to act has never been greater.
