The Cosmos-native layer-1 blockchain, Canto, is preparing to implement a crucial upgrade on August 12 to resolve a significant outage that has left the network down for 33 hours. This disruption, which began on August 11, has been attributed to an issue with the blockchain’s consensus mechanism, a fundamental aspect that ensures the integrity of transactions on the network.
Canto, launched in August 2022, is a permissionless blockchain designed primarily for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. In September 2023, Canto announced plans to migrate to the Ethereum Network and become a layer-2 network via the Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK).
The platform’s focus on DeFi and its EVM compatibility have positioned it as a notable player in the blockchain space, especially for projects looking to leverage Ethereum’s ecosystem while benefiting from Cosmos’s interoperability.
According to CantoScan, the blockchain’s dedicated block explorer, the network has been inactive for over a day, with the last recorded transaction occurring at 2:29 AM UTC on August 11. Similarly, Etherscan, which tracks activities on EVM-compatible networks, has shown no new transactions on Canto during this period, with only two transactions recorded in the preceding 46 hours.
This prolonged outage has raised concerns among users and observers, given the typically high uptime expected from blockchain networks.
Notably, the outage occurred just days after the scheduled Callisto upgrade on August 9, which was intended to enhance the network.
Canto’s team responded to the situation on August 12 through their official social media channels, acknowledging the problem and confirming that an upgrade aimed at resolving the consensus issue is scheduled for 12:00 PM UTC on the same day.
The consensus mechanism, which is critical for validating and securing transactions on the blockchain, appears to be the root cause of the outage. However, the team has provided limited details on the nature of the problem, leaving some questions unanswered.
Canto has yet to clarify whether the Callisto upgrade was successfully implemented or if it played a role in the current disruption. The timing of the outage, so close to the upgrade, has led to speculation about a possible connection between the two events.
