Ethereum developers say plans are on to ensure the launch of the network’s Pectra upgrade before the end of the first quarter of 2025. Notably, the unveiling will happen in March 2025 with some specific milestones that will build up to the mainnet fork.
According to an update on this, by February, new client releases for the upgrade and hard forks on Ethereum test networks, Sepolia and Holesky will come on. This development will take place in coordination with client software teams.
If the fork on the testnets is successful, the team will proceed to the mainnet rollout in March. This process which was initially scheduled to occur in late 2024 experienced a shift in date. Notably, the upgrade scope expanded significantly which caused delays and a new date.
The Pectra upgrade hopes to incorporate several Ethereum Improvement Proposals, Notably, the upgrade focuses on improving user experience and overall network efficiency.
Some of the changes incorporated include an improved experience in crypto wallets and account abstraction. Others involve updating deposit and exit mechanisms and an increase in the maximum validator stake limit. This has been raised from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH.
At present, validators for Ethereum are subject to a balance cap set at a minimum and maximum of 32 ETH. This restriction mandates large scale operations to set up multiple validators so as to earn yield on amounts larger than the set limit. This restriction has resulted in over 900,000 validator stakes.
Meanwhile, validators in the Ethereum community are rallying for an increase in the gas limit. Notably, 30% of validators have voted in favor of raising the gas limit above 30 million.
Prior to this time, developers have also spun up short-duration “devnets” for testing phases for individual components of the Pectra upgrade. Ethereum developers in November 2024 also launched a temporary Mekong testnet to test key upgrades for Pectra.
Members of the community hope to see the Pectra upgrade go live in March as scheduled. The launch will mark a significant milestone following the Dencun upgrade.
The upgrade could have an impact on the value of ETH which currently exchanges for $3,421.46, which is a 3.15% increase in the last 24 hours. There are speculations that ETH could soar to $12,000 this year.
