Bill Murray, a well-known American actor and comedian, was the most recent victim of hackers, squandering $185,000 in ETH just hours after ending his non-fungible token (NFT) charity auction.

In accordance with on-chain data from Etherscan and further details from Murray’s team, the hackers broke into the actor’s wallet on September 1 at about 7:00 p.m. ET and began to steal money from it.

Murray raised funds for charity

After Murray finished selling an exclusive NFT from the “Bill Murray 1000” NFT collection that was on the Coinbase NFT marketplace earlier this week, the attack took place. Over $185,000 worth of 119.2 ETH were raised during the auction.

A three-year-old child who has persistent epilepsy and the effects of a rare CLDN5 gene mutation was to get care from Chive Charities with the aid of the money from the NFT auction. In the end, the hackers almost completely removed all of the wallet’s money.

The intruders allegedly attempted to take NFTs from the actor’s own supply, according to Murray’s staff. The security staff from Project Venkman, the consulting company in charge of Murray’s wallets, intervened right away and moved the NFTs that were being targeted.

The wallet contained more than 800 NFTs, including CryptoPunks, Cool Cat, Pudgy Penguin, and Flower Girls, in addition to various additional NFTs owned by the actor. However, Project Venkman relocated these NFTs to several safehouse wallets.

The attackers’ means of accessing Murray’s wallet remain a mystery, and no one has yet been identified as the crime’s perpetrators.

The actor’s staff disclosed that they reported the attack to the police. In order to look into the hack in more detail and find the perpetrators, they are also collaborating with blockchain analytics company Chainalysis.

A generous contributor has stepped up to replace the stolen funds, giving 120 ETH worth more than $187,000 to Chive Charities in the interim.

The auction’s second-place bidder, a Coinbase user going by the alias Mishap72, was the beneficiary. If the stolen property is found, it will also be used to pay for the child’s health care expenses.
