‘Facebook, a cancer to democracy’ — AOC

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known by her initials AOC has called Facebook a “cancer to democracy” in one of her recent twitter posts following the announcement made by the company that it was changing its brand name to Meta to better reflect its much bigger ambitions of building the metaverse.

The American politician and activist who has been serving as the U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional district since 2019, as a member of the Democratic Party discussed some more on the name changing by Facebook.

Ocasio-Cortez said sarcastically, that by using ‘Meta’,  Facebook meant to say that it is now “a cancer to democracy metastasizing into a global surveillance and propaganda machine” for bolstering authoritarian regimes and destroying civil society, albeit for profit, according to her tweet.

Ocasio-Cortez is arguably one of the most vocal critics of Facebook in Congress and this is really not the first time she’s accusing the firm of being a threat to democracy. Year 2019 was the time when lawmakers first started to place Facebook’s market dominance under scrutiny. AOC said at the time,  that while Facebook may have its own personal problems, it was increasingly starting to look like the society, or better still, democracy might be having a serious Facebook problem.

Frances Gauge, an ex-employee had accused the company for prioritizing profit rather than protecting public information. An allegation that the firm has since denied.
