The International Criminal Police Organization, popularly known as Interpol has introduced its first-ever Metaverse office specifically designed for law enforcement worldwide.

In the 90th Interpol General Assembly in India on October 20, it was announced that the Interpol Metaverse will allow registered users to tour around virtually. Happily, users will be able to tour without any geographical or physical boundaries. Also, they will be allowed to interact with officers using avatars, and take training courses in investigation and policing abilities.

Fully operational, the Interpol Metaverse is provided by the Interpol Secure Cloud which ensures its security and neutrality. During the surprise and interactive session in New Delhi, delegates from the General Assembly were able to enter the building digitally making use of virtual reality headsets.

According to General Jurgen Stock, Interpol Secretary, it is the organization’s aim to protect and support countries around them against crime. He added saying it doesn’t matter if the world is virtual or not, the organization is aimed at making those who cohabit in the world safe.

Furthermore, Interpol noted that increases in digitalization have also resulted in an increase in virtual crimes.

Interpol to police the virtual world

Interestingly, this is the first of its kind in the virtual world designed for law enforcement agencies. Interpol also created an Expert Group on the metaverse that will represent the interest of law enforcement on the Global stage ensuring this virtual world is secure by design.

Notably, the Metaverse has a lot of benefits for law enforcement especially in networking, collecting, and keeping evidence from the crime scene.

Students also benefit by having opportunities to network and have higher engagement through resourceful hands-on activities. All of these benefits were practicalized in the Interpol Capacity building by Experts after delivering a training course.

Mr. Oberoi, Interpol’s Executive Director of Technology and Innovation said in a statement that the metaverse has the ability to transform every aspect of one’s daily life.

In his words “But in order for police to understand the Metaverse, we need to experience it”.

Meanwhile, a recent study by DappRadar has revealed that the interest and demand for the metaverse have remained high. This is despite a massive drop in trading volume. Several platforms including Walmart and Microsoft have utilized the virtual world to promote their brands.
