The family of Sam Bankman-Fried, the disgraced Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of FTX exchange has called the Bahamian prison officials to request that he be served only vegan meals.Â
The Fox Hill correctional center in Nassau, Bahamas is notorious for its harsh conditions including rodent infestation however Bankman-Fried’s relatives are being hopeful that their request will be met and his dietary needs will be attended to.
The former CEO of now-bankrupt FTX was arrested a few days ago and is being held in the Fox Hill Correctional Centre, Nassau. His arrest, which was ordered by the United States government, happened just a day before he was scheduled to testify in front of Congress. The charges against him include wire and securities fraud, conspiracy to commit wire and securities fraud, and money laundering.Â
Sam Bankman-Fried awaits potential extradition to the U.S., where he already has eight charges against him.
He will be held in his room in the maximum prison of the Bahamas until February 8th when his extradition hearing will be held. Citing the COVID-19 restrictions, he is not allowed to entertain visitors. For now, it is not certain if his vegan request will be granted by the prison.
A human right report by the States Department which was published last year gave an insight into what the Fox Hill prison looks like. Inmates in the prison were made to relieve themselves using buckets, also the prisons are packed full and now overflowing. This seems to be a far cry from the luxurious life that the overpowered cryptocurrency billionaire is used to.
His lawyers have asked that he be granted a cash bail citing that he has attention deficit disorder (ADD) and now the vegan diet. According to the lawyers, Sam Bankman-Fried is expected to take his medication regularly.
During one of the investigations following the implosion of the FTX exchange, it was discovered that SBF’s parent and some senior executives of the exchange own over 19 properties in the Bahamaa worth $121 million. Markedly, all of these purchases were done between 2021 and 2022 amongst which is a penthouse in a resort in Albany, New York.
