Sign-in with Ethereum is being developed by Spruce Systems, the recent winner of a development R.F.P. from the Ethereum Foundation and Ethereum Name Service is the next revolutionary solution to be released by Ethereum.
In order to understand the working of Sign-in with Ethereum, one will have to understand the basics of what happens when you sign in on a platform. Every time you sign in, you are giving up the necessary details that can be manipulated in many ways.
For example, Facebook, Twitter, and Google were all criticized recently for their fishy activities wherein they store the user’s data. This data might be used by the U.S. government for might be shared with the highest bidders.
To counter this, Ethereum came up with the Sign-in with the Ethereum concept. This feature would prevent the users from giving up their I.D.s for every small or big service they subscribe to. Hence, Ethereum took a “decentralized” approach to identification.
The concept behind Sign-in with Ethereum stands based on a simple analogy. Consider an Ethereum wallet that you own as a standard wallet that is linked to all the social platforms you are connected to.
So, you can easily add your Ethereum wallet to these accounts and use them for making payments. The “decentralized” part here is that the payment service will not be connected to an account. There, your name, D.O.B., or other personal details will be present.
Rather, a cryptographic I.D. will be representing you, and you can decide what details you want to provide during the moment when you are subscribing to a service. Hence, you won’t have to reveal everything to every service provider.
Currently, this idea might be digestible to crypto enthusiasts and blockchain developers but, it is certainly not for everyone. This is the reason why Wayne Chang, the C.E.O. of Spruce Systems, said,
“We’re starting with a not as serious, not as strong identity.”
