Star Trek creator’s signature becomes an NFT, goes into a living DNA

It all began in 1965 when Gene Roddenberry entered into a contract with Lucille Ball’s Desilu Productions to fund Star Trek. However, on November 30, 2021, exactly 3 decades after the death of the Sci-Fi legend, his signature has now been turned into a nonfungible token (NFT). And even on top of that, the NFT has also been boldly embedded into the DNA code of a living cell.

Star Trek creates the first living NFT

As confirmed by Roddenberry Entertainment, this is a first-of-its-kind “Living Eco-NFT” and a true mix of science fiction and science itself. In addition, the company expects that just like every living thing, this piece will replicate and grow alongside with the cell divisions of the organism. In other words, there’s chances that a billion copies of the Eco-NFT can be created overnight, as long as the organism remains alive.

Meanwhile, the super uncommon kind of NFT, dubbed “El Primero”—Spanish translation for “The First” — is presently being exhibited as a piece of art in Art Basel 2021, being held in Miami.

Also sharing his view on the new NFT, award-winning director and CEO of Rational Vaccines, Agustin Fernandez — who also partnered to create the piece, — says that the new revelation of the fact that information can be stored in the DNA will open up quite a lot of possibilities for data archiving.

The NFTs can be found on the Solana blockchain with backing from Metaplex Studios.

Meanwhile, the signature encoding was carried out by Dr. Paul Predki, who then stored the DNA in a bacterial cell that naturally multiplies itself.

Movies are no strangers to NFTs or collectibles, and Star Trek is definitely not either. In July 2020 alone, more than 125,000 NFT trading cards that were on the WAX Blockchain, were bought by the fans of the entertainment franchise.
