Later this year, the University of Tokyo, popularly known as Todai, will reportedly launch a number of educational programs that will take place in the Metaverse.
The Asahi Shimbun, a local news source, recently reported that students from high school to working individuals would be able to enroll in these courses.
The goal of Todai’s project is to address the shortage of qualified employees in the fields of “digital transformation” and “advanced technologies.”
In addition, university officials stressed that learning information science and engineering in the Metaverse will enable anyone, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic position, and location of residence, to do so.
Junior high and high school students will be given an overview of the topic and instructed on possible career paths in engineering, science, and other related fields. They will learn the material through a combination of online and in-person lessons.
According to the report, Todai’s department of engineering and graduate schools that specialize in technology will oversee the Metaverse study programs rather than its own specialized faculty that grants degrees. Certificates will be given to students who finish the courses.
Although cryptocurrency and NFTs weren’t explicitly mentioned, there was likely some discussion about blockchain-based platforms because the industry is frequently linked to the Metaverse and has a number of well-known brands.
In February, the biggest bank in the U.S., JPMorgan, entered the Metaverse by constructing a virtual lounge in Decentraland and called the sector a “$1 trillion opportunity.” Moreover, in the same month, the world’s largest video streaming company YouTube also indicated its plans to explore opportunities in NFT and Metaverse world.
As locals develop creative uses for the technology, there have been some significant Metaverse applications in Japan during the past few months. Japan Today reported on July 25 that the Fukuoka-based JACFA support group had opened a virtual support room on the SecondLife platform.
