American multinational technology company Microsoft has the goal of reimagining what it means to be an industrial worker by leveraging the metaverse.
According to a report published by The Information, the IT giant announced the launch of a new team within the company last week called Industrial Metaverse Core.
It has been reported that the team’s objective is to develop immersive software interfaces for the use of industrial control systems, which have a variety of applications including powering power plants, industrial robotics, and transportation networks.
According to the source, Microsoft’s industrial offering would contain technology that was developed by Bonsai, which is a low-code AI development platform that Microsoft acquired in 2018. Gurdeep Pall, corporate vice president and head of autonomous systems at Microsoft, stated at the time of the acquisition that Bonsai will be implemented on top of the company’s Azure public cloud.

Microsoft envisions a future in which a virtual world with an emphasis on industrial activities will be utilized to monitor machinery or factory environments. It could be used by aircraft maintenance to examine jet engines within a synthetic software environment, with the mechanics evaluating the machinery while donning artificial reality or virtual reality headsets.
As a result of the growth of the Azure service, industrial engineers are now able to utilize it to combine artificial intelligence with industrial equipment and processes, without the requirement of any prior experience in software development to do so, as reported by The Information.
This is not the first time the tech giant has shown interest in Metaverse. Before this, Microsoft launched 3D metaverse apps for Xbox and gaming in November last year, as TheCoinRise reported.
More interestingly, its competitor Google also formed a Web3 team in May this year. It’s Google Cloud recently started allowing crypto payments for select users.
